Second-Hand vs New Base Van: Choosing the Right Vehicle to Convert

Once you’ve decided to have a campervan built, there’s a practical question that comes before layouts and finishes: what do you build it on? Specifically — do you convert a second-hand van you buy yourself, or start with a brand-new base vehicle?

It’s an easy detail to skate over, but it affects your budget, your timeline and how long the finished camper will serve you. Here’s how to think it through.

The two routes, plainly

Bring your own used van. You find and buy a second-hand base vehicle, then it’s converted. Lower up-front vehicle cost, and you control exactly which van you build on.

Have a new one supplied. You choose our Signature Complete option and we source a brand-new base vehicle as part of the project. More expensive, but the vehicle under your conversion is factory-fresh, with no history to worry about.

Both are completely valid, and we’re happy to build on either. The right one depends on your budget and your appetite for risk.

Why convert a second-hand van

It’s cheaper up front. The base vehicle is often around half the total cost of a full build, so buying used is the single biggest lever for keeping the overall spend down.

Someone else took the depreciation hit. New vehicles lose value fastest in their first years. Buy a well-kept used van and that drop has already happened.

More choice and availability. You’re not tied to current lead times or model availability — you can shop the whole used market for the right van at the right price.

The catch: a used van is a used van. It may carry hidden wear, past repairs, rust or mechanical issues, and every year and mile adds uncertainty. A conversion can last well over a decade — so it’s worth making sure the vehicle underneath can go the distance too. It’s a false economy to build a beautiful camper on a tired van that needs a new engine in two years.

Why start with a new base van

Peace of mind. No history, no hidden problems, no MOT surprises — and a full manufacturer warranty on the vehicle itself, separate from the warranty on your conversion.

Maximum lifespan. Starting from zero miles means the base has the longest possible life ahead of it, which matters when you’re investing in a quality conversion you intend to keep.

Simplicity. With Signature Complete we handle the sourcing, so you don’t have to become a used-van expert or spend weekends viewing forecourts. On a full build where we supply the vehicle, your deposit also orders the van — one joined-up process rather than two separate jobs.

The catch is simply cost: a new van is a bigger outlay, and it takes the sharper depreciation on the chin in the early years.

What to check if you’re buying used

If you go the second-hand route, spend your effort on the vehicle’s bones, because the conversion can only be as good as what it’s built on:

• Body and structure — the big one on older vans. Surface rust is common; structural rot is expensive. Check sills, wheel arches, floor and around the doors (nearly new vans aren’t normally affected).
• Mechanical health — service history, cambelt record where relevant, how it drives, and any warning lights. A pre-purchase inspection is money well spent.
• Mileage vs price — a higher-mileage van can be a bargain or a liability; judge it on condition and history, not the number alone.
• MOT history — the DVLA’s free online record shows past advisories and failures, and tells you a lot about how a van’s been looked after.
• The right size and spec — make sure it’s the wheelbase and roof height your chosen layout needs. It’s heartbreaking to buy the “wrong” van and find your dream layout won’t fit. If you’re not certain, ask us before you buy — we’d far rather steer you to the right vehicle than convert the wrong one.

If budget is the priority and you’re happy to buy carefully (or take advice on what to buy), a good used base van is a smart, sensible choice — and the route many of our customers take. A nearly new vehicle, prior to its first MOT, or an ex-lease vehicle is usually a good choice.
